They barricade themselves behind file cabinets. They fortify their partitions with towers of books and papers. Or they follow an “evolving law of technology etiquette,” as articulated by Raj Udeshi at the open office he shares with fellow software entrepreneurs in downtown Manhattan. “Headphones are the new wall,” he said, pointing to the covered ears of his neighbors. Cubicle culture is already something of a punch line — how many ways can we find to annoy one another all day? — but lately the complaints are being heard by the right people, including managers and social scientists. Companies are redesigning offices, piping in special background noise to improve the acoustics and bringing in engineers to solve volume issues. “Sound masking” has become a buzz phrase. Scientists, for their part, are measuring the unhappiness and the lower productivity of distracted workers. After surveying 65,000 people over the past decade in North America, Europe, Africa and Australia, researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, report that more than half of office workers are dissatisfied with the level of “speech privacy,” making it the leading complaint in offices everywhere. “In general, people do not like the acoustics in open offices,” said John Goins, the leader of the survey conducted by Berkeley’s Center for the Built Environment. “The noisemakers aren’t so bothered by the lack of privacy, but most people are not happy, and designers are finally starting to pay attention to the problem.”

This Anacin commerical from the mid-1960s used to scare me as a kid. The woman''s intensity when she screams at her kid is really beyond anything you saw on commercials back then. It''s even odd in comparison to today''s commercials; the tone is very off-putting.%0D\ %0D\ I remember the woman looking really old...more like someone''s grandmother than mother...but watching it decades later, I realize the actress was probably only in her early thirties at the time.
What TV commercial do you remember best from your childhood?
Anyone else a "Degrassiac"? I can''t get enough of this show. Teen Nick''s been running marathons on the weekends. I''m a total addict. Oh by the way, I''m 44 years old.
Who'd a thunk it would be this hard?
I'm allergic to smoke, and so is my partner (!) and we're sick for a day after a slight exposure. It's physical, not psychological. New neighbors next door moved in, who apparently like both to spend a lot of time outside and to do their smoking out of doors. It's close quarters between our houses, with their deck close to our property line. We have hollies planted for privacy between them. We haven't met them yet - they moved in last week. My partner and I were out at 9 yesterday morning in our yard. At 9:15 the neighbors were out, smoking. We tried moving to the side yard on the other side of the building, but the smoke followed us. So we went in. We tried later, and out they were again. Same thing this morning. We went out this afternoon. The neighbors came out and started smoking. What would you suggest? Do we wait until we know each other and try to cover the topic, somehow? It doesn't look hopeful - they look like suburbanites who have moved into the city and they appear to drink a lot. Party people. I wish smokers would understand that smoke doesn't just disappear outside where the air is still and people are close to each other. After eight years living next door to the place as a drug hole where teen prostitution went on, and then eight years of sitting next to it empty and derelict, as we landscaped and mowed and did everything to keep it from looking like what it was, it would be nice to have an agreeable resolution. The big problem is that given today's lack of common ground and fractured mores and anger and broken communities, there doesn't seem to be a basis from which to start . . .
Carry on, bitches.

Single Mother Bristol Palin Tells Obama Same-Sex Marriage is Wrong Because Kids Need a Mom and Dad Bristol Palin finally — finally — weighed in on President Obama's same-sex marriage stance and, guess what? She's against it. Didn't see that coming, huh? In a new blog post entitled "Hail to the Chiefs – Malia and Sasha Obama," Bristol takes issue with the influential role Obama's daughters supposedly played in helping him "evolve" his opinion on same-sex marriage. "In this case, it would've been helpful for him to explain to Malia and Sasha that while her friends parents are no doubt lovely people, that's not a reason to change thousands of years of thinking about marriage," she writes. "Or that – as great as her friends may be – we know that in general kids do better growing up in a mother/father home. Ideally, fathers help shape their kids' worldview." Says the unwed single mother of one whose baby daddy is the living embodiment of Goofus from Highlights. Sadly, she goes on: Sometimes dads should lead their family in the right ways of thinking. In this case, it would've been nice if the President would've been an actual leader and helped shape their thoughts instead of merely reflecting what many teenagers think after one too many episodes of Glee. OK, enough. Go after the president, fine. Object to his worldview, no sweat. Use an antediluvian argument about an institution that has been constantly shaped and reshaped — even within Christianity itself — in order to excuse your blatant discrimination of taxpaying American citizens, that's your thing. But don't you dare speak ill of Glee. That show is great.

05/18/2012 MOST RELIGIOUS: Salt Lake City (74% religious adherents) LEAST RELIGIOUS: Portland, OR (32% religious adherents) A study measuring religious bodies in the United States called the, “2010 U.S. Religious Census: Religious Congregations & Membership Study (RCMS)” was recently released by the Association of Statisticians of American Religious Bodies (ASARB). The most comprehensive study of its kind, it provides detailed county by county information on congregations, members, adherents and attendance for 236 different faiths groups. (The survey differentiates between specific denominations within the same tradition.) Of metropolitan areas with population greater than a million, the researchers found Salt Lake City to be the most religious city with close to 74 percent identifying as a religious adherent. The researchers found the greater area of Portland, OR-WA to be the least religious city with about 32 percent identifying as a religious adherent. The researchers define adherents to be those with an affiliation to a congregation including children, members and attendees who are not members, and believe that the adherent measure is the most complete and comparable across religious groups. As the chart below shows, more than 54 percent of adherents were from metropolitan areas with population of a million and above. In general, cities where more than 75 percent identified as a religious adherent were in the deep South and in the Midwest. Cities where less than 35 percent identified as a religious adherent were in the West and in the Northeast.
According to this article, "On the verge of Minor League free agency last year, Anthony Recker made a deal with a buddy back home that, if things didn't work out with baseball, they'd team up for an attempt to land a job with the FBI." Would you suggest the FBI for him or something else? If something else, what would that be? Short video of him swinging at linked article.
If baseball doesn't work out for DL ass icon Anthony Recker, what should he do?
I mean one where you cannot have personal calls at all and your cell phone better not ring and absolutely no internet access. I temped once between jobs for a small family owned company that had been in business for years. It was a miserable, boring job. I was stuck in a room with 3 other women with an office immediately behind it with a female manager who was like a benign dictator. She was nice but there was minimal chit chat allowed and absolutely nothing personal. We had no internet access at all when most companies at least allow some for business purposes. I got out after two weeks. I hated it anyway but one of the fat gals in the room with me started shit. She was a backstabbing, bitter bitch who was desperate to be a big fish in a small pond.
